SUMMER HOURS

So many people have been waiting for the return of our regular hours.  Wait no more.  This week we will be open longer.  Trees and gardens are providing some goodies.

      Hours

Tuesday through Saturday           10:00 to 6:00

Sunday                                         11:00 to 5:00

Closed on Mondays

It is unusual for our early varieties of peaches to ripen before the end of May.  This year we are almost finished with Spring Crest peaches.  Next we expect to harvest Flavorcrest peaches.  Royal Rosa apricots came and went quickly. Robada and Royal  apricots are next.  The Red Beaut plums are finished.  We are starting to harvest Santa Rosa plums.  It may be a year when all the crops mature early.

For the moment the vegetable garden is producing amazing peas and broccolini.  The beets are finished and the lettuce and komatsuna are on their last cuttings.  It is getting too warm for these crops.  A few zucchini are starting to produce.  Soon we will have chard and potatoes.  We will have to wait awhile for tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, and peppers.  So  keep checking this page.

Here is what we have at the Farm Stand from Otow Orchard.

VEGETABLES:

Komatsuna:  Tender leafy green vegetable, thought of as a Japanese spinach.  Taste is more like bok choy, mild with slight mustard flavor.  Can be added to salad, stir-fries, and soup.

Red Mustard Greens: Beautiful purple and green leaf mustard.  It has a slightly spicy flavor.  Can be sauteed, or added to soups.

Sugar Snap Peas:  Fresh, crisp, and juicy. These sweet and crunchy peas can be enjoyed raw or gently cooked. Can be used for garnish.

Broccolini:  similar to broccoli but milder and sweeter.  The florets,  leaves and stems are all edible in stir fries, sauteed, grilled, steamed, roasted, and raw.

Zucchini:  Green summer squash fresh out of the garden.  Tender green squash with white flesh.

FRUIT:

Springcrest peach:  Yellow semi freestone peach.  This peach is remarkably sweet, juicy and flavorful for an early peach variety.

Apricots:   Robada and Royal apricots are coming off the trees at this time.  There are not many of them. They are tasty and each variety has its unique flavor. (Limited supply)

Loquat:  This early season tropical fruit is sweet and refreshing.  It is small and juicy with sweet mild flavor.  Texture is similar to ripe pears.  Contain a large seed. (Limited supply)

MULBERRY SEASON HAS STARTED

More produce is showing up sooner than I thought.  Maybe this will be an early year for summer fruits.  We have started to harvest peaches, plums, pluots and apricots.

Winter vegetables are still with us as we get summer veggies planted.  I found that it is a bit tricky planning to put several crops into the same ground in succession.  For example, the row that was producing radishes and turnips last month are now planted with tomatoes.  And because we grew lettuce in  a different spot, we were able to plant eggplant.  And since seed potatoes arrived late we have to find a new place for the chili peppers.

As we get more supply, the slow season hours will extend to later in the afternoon.  Look for the "OPEN / CLOSED" signs at the entrance to the driveway.

SLOW SEASON HOURS

February to mid May:

Tues, Wed, and Thurs:  11:30 am to 1:30 pm

Fri and Sat:  10 am to 6 pm

 Monday                 CLOSED

You may request an appointment if you need a different time We will try to accommodate. Call my mobile phone and LEAVE A MESSAGE.  (916) 300-0720.

The end of 2025 was cold and moist.  No rain till the end.  Our persimmons and citrus hung on longer. When the cold came they responded quickly.  Luckily we had stacks of stored Fuyu persimmons that people have come by to purchase.  These are not as crisp as in November but they are still hard.  Most are getting softer and sweeter.

We made a quick run to the mandarin trees when we discovered that rain had promoted ripening and soft spots.  Many were damaged but there are still many good ones to enjoy.  The Navel orange crop is also quickly maturing.  We will be harvesting them soon.

Lupi Farm in Granite Bay is providing us with beautiful Meyer lemons and a mystery lemon.  The mystery lemon is sour with a bitter background.

At this time the  lower end of our farm is soaked with rain water runoff.  One farmer quickly realized how soft the earth was, and turned his tractor around and will wait for dryer times.  Too much mud.The other farmer tried to work, in spite of the risk.  That farmer spent the next day digging out his tractor with a shovel then pulling it out with anther tractor. Luckily the helping tractor did its job without getting stuck.

Here is what we have at the Farm Stand from Otow Orchard.

PERSIMMONS

FUYU:  These are low acid, firm, sweet and crisp.  People love them because they are always sweet. They can be eaten firm or softer depending on your preference.  It is late in the season for crisp Fuyu.  Many people are still enjoying the softer sweeter fruit.

Back row: Nagamaru (Chocolate,Tsurunoko), Hyakume (cinnamon), Hachiya. Front row  Maru, Coffee Cake (Nishimura Wase), Fuyu.

Hachiya:  Hachiya are tall, orange, acorn shaped persimmons that cannot be eaten till soft as pudding in a bag.  They become soft, sweet and juicy. It was suggested that you bite a little hole in the skin and suck out the contents for a sweet treat.  Watch out for the seeds.

Hyakume:   These persimmons  have speckled, cinnamon color fleshed when pollinated.  They are sweet and can be eaten hard or softer.  For the novice, our recommendation is to cut the persimmon to see the sweet brown flesh before biting into the fruit.  Often less than half of the persimmon is edible. Sold out till November 2026.

Vodka:  These are not actually a variety.  They are astringent Hyakume  persimmons that have been treated with Vodka  to make them sweet and enjoyable. They are  yellow or brown fleshed.  They can be eaten hard or soft.  When soft they are juicy and very smooth.

Hoshigaki :  These are whole dried persimmons.  They are hand massaged while they dry over a period of four to eight weeks.  Some are firm, others are soft and moist.  All are coated with naturally formed white persimmon sugar.  No sugar added and no preservatives used. We strive to make the best hoshigaki without any shortcuts.  This takes time and attention during the drying season.  The last hoshigaki for this season were peeled  at the end of November.  These will dry slowly for the next four to six weeks.  December and January are usually the best time to get hoshigaki. We are currently selling hoshigaki at the farm stand. For on farm orders of more than 1 pound it is best to email or call us to make a pre order.  For mail orders please use our mail order form.

CITRUS

Satsuma Mandarins:  Easy to peel, sweet, juicy and few seeds.  Great for fresh eating or adding to salad. High in vitamin C.

Navel Oranges:   Sweet and juicy with traditional orange flavor.

Blood Oranges:  This year most of our Blood Oranges are small and yellow on the outside.  But the inside is a vibrant red to orange color characteristic of this variety. They are flavorful, sweet and juicy.

 APPLES

Reinette Simirenko, Fuji, Granny Smith, Striped Red Delicious

Fuji:   Our Fuji apples are green with light red blush.  I blame this on our warm weather compared to cooler apple growing regions in the Northwest. Nonetheless our Fuji apples are sweet, crisp and full of juice. They are mostly used for fresh eating but also good for baking, cooking, drying and adding to salads.

Pink Lady:  (Cripps Pink) Beautiful deep pink skin.  Sweet tart flavor. Great for eating fresh, slicing into salads, and baking.  Resists browning when sliced.

ASIAN PEARS

Okusankichi:  Also known as Late Korean.  This is the last Asian pear we grow.  Mildly sweet, juicy and crisp.  The brown thick skin helps it to have a long shelf life.  It becomes sweeter as it is stored.  This winter treat offers a crisp refreshing treat in the middle of winter.

Quince:  Related to pears and apples, quince are firm, fragrant, and tart. They contain pectin which promotes gelling. Seldom eaten raw, it is usually cooked with sweetener for jam jelly, candy or added to stews. Quince sauce pairs nicely with pork. Thinly sliced raw quince can be added to tea or water.

Pecans:  Sweet and nutty and thin shelled.  Hand harvested before the crows got them!!!  I really have no idea but they look like Shawnee variety.

Local Honey  Honey ๐Ÿฏ from bees ๐Ÿ at Otow Orchard. Bee pollen from bees ๐Ÿ at Otow Orchard is also available.

⚘ Calendula  Salve and Lip Balm:  Wonderfully thick salve for healing dry skin, bug bites and scrapes.

Here is what we have from other producers:

Lupi Farm in Granite Bay, No spray.

Meyer Lemons:   These sought after lemons are less acidic than regular lemons. They have a thin peel often used for its fragrant zest.  Meyer are rounder than regular lemons with a dark yellow skin.

Mystery Lemons: These lemons were found as part of another lemon tree.  Possibly a root stock or a sport.  Nonetheless they are edible, sour and a bit bitter.

La Bella Vito Farm in Loomis brings us fresh๐Ÿฅš eggs from pastured ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”chickens.  Chickens are currently molting so egg production is low.  Also, production is limited by short daylight hours. Currently no supply. Production should increase in February.  Limited supply.

Vanilla Exract:  Homemade in Loomis, CA at La Bella Vito Farm. Fragrant vanilla flavoring from Madagascar vanilla beans.

FINALLY A TASTE OF SUMMER

This week we started harvesting some peaches and plums.  Slowly we are beginning to see peaches, plums, pluots, and nectarines ripening on the trees.  Not enough to make all our customers happy.  Hopefully they can be patient.  And when we let a small tray go out the door we try to caution people to let the fruit set on the counter a couple days to bring out the flavor and sweetness and juice.

In the peach department, we are harvesting Flavorcrest, a yellow freestone peach.  I never think these early freestone  peaches like to come apart as easily as the later peaches.  Red Haven and Regina peaches are coming off the trees.  Two favorite varieties of many of our customers.  They will be at their peak for a week.  So don't miss out.

In the plum department, the Santa Rosas are quickly coming to maturity.   I'll be sorting a hundred boxes this week.  These all time  favorite plum will be available for about a month.  Occasionally we get a few red flesh plums: Burgundy, Black Splendor, and Frontier.

Apricot season was unusually productive.  We are winding  down the apricot season with Royal Blenheim.

We have cleaned up the citrus trees. Next year's crop is already hanging on the trees.  They are still very small and very green. This year's Eureka lemons and Valencia oranges that we harvested will keep nicely in the cool room for a few weeks.

The time we put into our gardens is starting to pay off.  Slowly we are getting zucchini and yellow summer squash. Armenian and Japanese cucumber are also starting their harvest.  The tomatoes are still green although I am beginning to pick some cherry tomatoes.

NOT WINTER BUT SUMMER

It's not winter, so hoshigaki season is on the back burner. It is still available at the farm stand but not through mail order.  And now we switch our attention to things of summer like stone fruit and veggies.

The peach season has started but it seems that they sell almost as soon as they are brought into the farm stand.  Don't worry, much more is on the way.  A few lucky customers were able to snag some of the Springrose or Springcrest peaches.  There will soon be Maycrest and Junecrest.  Then we will start harvesting Flavorcrest and Regina peaches.

Apricots are happy this year.  I'm not sure why but something in the weather we were handed was agreeable to them.  Robada and Royal Rosa apricots sold out quickly.  Now we are bring in Blenheim (Royal) and Patterson.  Both are excellent varieties.

It is an unusual year. Not only do we have a good harvest of apricots but there are also respectable nectarines on the trees.  Meaning they are not quite as scarred up and cracked as we normally have.  There will be a limited amount of white Jade nectarines in the near future.

Loquats are now producing small, sweet and juicy fruit.  Between the large brown seed and the firm yellow skin is sweet juicy flesh.

SANTA ROSA plums are starting ripen.  These are the most popular and sought after variety of plums. They  have a distinctive flavor and enticing fragrance. They are both sweet and  sour at the beginning of the season.  Later ones are all sweet and juicy.

We are now offering flowers.  The fresh flower bouquets are coming from La Bella Vito Farm in Loomis. The bouquets are garden fresh and contain colorful in-season blooms.  Come check them out.

Slowly the gardens are starting to produce.  Green and yellow summer squash have both made their debut.  A few Sungold cherry tomatoes are getting ready.  Sorry, but big tomatoes and cucumber are weeks away.

Last fall we dried and massaged persimmons to make hoshigaki.  The ones that did not sell were stored in the freezer.  We will be slowly selling these at the farm stand.  Most of the hoshigaki that we will be selling are firmer or not as sugared as we like.  Nonetheless they retain the favor of hoshigaki.  We cut firmer hoshigaki  into strips and are sold in snack bags.  All this this say hoshigaki is not available through mail order at this time.  Most likely mail order will be available late November and December.  People are encouraged to look for the 2025 Mail order form in October and send their order in early.
