TOMATO SEASON

The long awaited tomato season is here.  We have big red slicers, yellow heirlooms and yellow and red cherry tomatoes.  Time for a summer salad or a big juicy sandwich.

Peaches are going strong with both yellow and white freestone peaches.  Time for peach pie, and peach cobbler, or my favorite peach crisp. Many of the current varieties are also used for freezing, canning and jams.  We are also harvesting cling peaches. These would give a sturdy peach to any processed or baked peach.  We enjoy these fresh when looking for something to get your teeth into.

PEACHES, PLUMS, PLUOTS AND NECTARINES

It's a mystery.  I don't know why but we have decent looking nectarines this year.  Not a lot, but more than usual.  Flavortop and Fantasia are both yellow fleshed with great taste.  Heavenly White is a white fleshed nectarine with great flavor.  Hope you have an opportunity to get some before they are gone.

We are harvesting mid season peaches at the beginning of July.  There is already color appearing on late season peaches.  I get the feeling that the peach season will likely end early.  Please make note.

During the 50's, 60's and 70's, our farm, along with many farms in Placer County, was busy growing plums as a summer crop.  Plums were harvested, sorted and packed into crates on our farm.  At the end of the day, the crates were delivered to a fruit shed in Loomis.  The fruit shed sold our plums to Colorado, Boston, Chicago, and New York markets. Today, the farm stand is filing up with many different varieties  of plums, some I don't have room to display.

Tomato season is just starting.  Cherry tomatoes are coming off the vines and we are getting a few slicers every day. There is a good supply of basil, cucumbers and squash.  Okra and eggplant are starting  to come in. The last harvest of potatoes will happen this week.

FINALLY A TASTE OF SUMMER

This week we started harvesting some peaches and plums.  Slowly we are beginning to see peaches, plums, pluots, and nectarines ripening on the trees.  Not enough to make all our customers happy.  Hopefully they can be patient.  And when we let a small tray go out the door we try to caution people to let the fruit set on the counter a couple days to bring out the flavor and sweetness and juice.

In the peach department, we are harvesting Flavorcrest, a yellow freestone peach.  I never think these early freestone  peaches like to come apart as easily as the later peaches.  Red Haven and Regina peaches are coming off the trees.  Two favorite varieties of many of our customers.  They will be at their peak for a week.  So don't miss out.

In the plum department, the Santa Rosas are quickly coming to maturity.   I'll be sorting a hundred boxes this week.  These all time  favorite plum will be available for about a month.  Occasionally we get a few red flesh plums: Burgundy, Black Splendor, and Frontier.

Apricot season was unusually productive.  We are winding  down the apricot season with Royal Blenheim.

We have cleaned up the citrus trees. Next year's crop is already hanging on the trees.  They are still very small and very green. This year's Eureka lemons and Valencia oranges that we harvested will keep nicely in the cool room for a few weeks.

The time we put into our gardens is starting to pay off.  Slowly we are getting zucchini and yellow summer squash. Armenian and Japanese cucumber are also starting their harvest.  The tomatoes are still green although I am beginning to pick some cherry tomatoes.

TIME FOR JUJUBE

Somehow summer is slipping away.  The trees know this and they are getting ready to switch gears from summer to fall.  Our stone fruit harvest is dwindling with fewer and fewer peaches and plums to display.  Coming in are a few  pears, Asian pears, jujube and grapes.

The jujube trees are loaded.  We will be harvesting all of them in the next 2 to 3 weeks.  Sugar Cane, the small, shiny, round variety, is about finished.  We are beginning to harvest the Li variety.  Li is a large (about 1 inch diameter) oblong jujube .  Like other jujube it has the texture of an apple but not as juicy.  It is sweet and crisp when  firm and as  it wrinkles and gets older it becomes sweeter and more chewy.  The internet suggests that jujube are good for many health conditions.  Often thought of as helpful for anxiety and insomnia as well as improving digestion and general health.

The O'Henry peaches and Rio Oso Gem peaches came and went so fast.  The last 3 varieties are not be as promising as earlier ones.  We are starting Summerset peaches and soon there will be a few Fairtime and Late Alamar peaches.  Sunnyslope Farm is bringing us  Trazee freestone peaches.  Large, sweet and juicy.

We have offered our customers a large array of plum choices this year.  Still on our table are Laroda, Elephant Heart, Late Santa Rosa, Eldordo, and Casselman.  Elephant Heart plums are sweet with red flesh.  The others are sweet with yellow flesh.

The Asian pear harvest is starting.  There are a few brown skinned pears:  Hosui, Shinko, and Yoi.  The 20th Century yellow pear is also available.  All are crisp, juicy, and sweet. Great for snacks and lunches.

We have stored away the bartlett pears in the cool room to encourage even  ripening.  We will soon bring them out for the display.

Fig production is slowing.  We are harvesting Panache figs. These figs are so sweet and moist. They usually sell out within a day.  The other figs, Brown Turkey and Black Mission are trickling in, not many of these varieties left.

The first persimmons are getting ready.  A walk through the orchard reveals green persimmons taking on a muted orange color.  We have a few Coffee Cake (Nishimura Wase) persimmons in the farm stand.  These look like Fuyu persimmons but are astringent unless pollinated. Only when pollinated do they become brown and sweet.  We try to display only the sweet ones ๐Ÿ˜‹but may occasionally miss.  ๐Ÿ˜.

Winter squash is making its debut.  There are delicata, kabocha and butternut squashes.  Time for roasting, baking, steaming, microwaving and making soups and stews.
